“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
excerpt from Sonnet by Emma Lazarus
Everyone Has A Story
“We are a nation of immigrants. We are the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the ones who wanted a better life, the driven ones, the ones who woke up at night hearing that voice telling them that life in that place called America could be better.”
— Mitt Romney

As an immigration lawyer, I am privileged, honored and inspired by the thousands of stories I have heard over the many years from U.S. citizens and immigrants. Everyone has a story and I find myself amazed at the courage, the challenges, the heroism, the brilliance, the richness, the diversity, the strong family values, the strength, the resilience, the creativity, and the incredible entrepreneurial spirit that so many foreign national bring so many to our shores. People continue to enter the U.S. for many of the same reasons as did our ancestors.
Here is what I know: Behind every U.S. citizen who was blessed to be born in these United States; behind every person who has pledged allegiance to this incredible country when they become naturalized citizens; behind every documented immigrant; and behind every undocumented immigrant there is a story. It a rich story of bravery, courage, and survival, that we carry from our ancestors, that is in our blood, for generations and generations.
President Kennedy said that every American who ever lived, with the exception of one group, was either an immigrant himself or a descendant of immigrants” and that the exception – Native Americans – were considered by some to be immigrants themselves.
What is Your Story?
Unless you are were one of the first Americans, who lived here, your family came from somewhere else. Where does your immigration story begin? I invite you to share your family story. There is such a richness to who we are as a people, as a nation of immigrants. I would love to give you an opportunity to tell that story. This is about you and your family and your ancestors.
I want to hear all stories:
- Whether your ancestors came to this country without documentation before we became a country called the United States of America;
- Whether your ancestors came to the U.S. through Ellis Island, our northern border or southern border;
- Whether they came on a ship;
- Whether they just crossed the border from Canada or the river from Mexico;
- Whether they came with a temporary visa and never went home or whether they came without any visa;
- Whether they came seeking asylum or refuge from persecution or war ravaged countries
